Talks and articles on science. 2001

Feb 7 Talk at NYU on JET: improved confinement in a Tokamak by argon gas puffing into the periphery and by adjusting plasma triangularity. Cost estimate of downsized ITER toroid--$3.3 billion. Sounds like a con job to me. * * * * Feb 15__Manheim on fission-fusion at NYU: use neutrons from the fusion reaction to generate plutonium or U233. Much easier than a pure fusion reactor, because each 14 Mev neutron interacts with the blanket to generate an additional 50 Mev. Definitely a possible path to more energy if you fear not nuclear contamination or proliferation. * * * * Mar 8: lecture at PPL on a method for creating atomic oxygen atoms to etch silicon chips, a variation on our old NASA project. * * * * Apr 11__ NYU colloquium: Martin Hoffert on how nuclear power can ease global warming caused (possibly) by the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuel. * * * * June 4 'Cracking the Genome" by Kevin Davies. Good tale of the competition between Craig Venter of Celera and Francis Collins of NIH to sequence the human genome. Should have supplied a glossary at the front for those of us confused by EST's. BRCA's, and RNA's.
