St Kieran's #1 Cemetary

I am greatly indebted to Ann Marie Donahue for starting the tree and to Jim Motley of Marlton, NJ for sending it to me. I also acknowledge help from Bernadette Hughes, Peggy Smith, Pat Whiteash, Marie Yanchick, Theresa and Ray Motley, Linda Motley,  Linda Chikotas and Gary Cantwell. Most of the data have been supplied by the ceaseless work of Lisa Quinn. Her tombstone data are more reliable than the census records.

General comments about the family tree (circa May 2007)

James Motley and his parents are listed in the 1870 census, but not in the 1860.(Is this correct? The 1860 census is handwritten--very hard to read) The 1870 census records that the parents, John and Bridget, were born in Ireland, and their first son, James, born in England, but their second son, Robert, was born in Pennsylvania.(NB:Gary Cantwell has pointed this out to me. This would imply that John and Bridget came to this country between 1846 and 1850)
We need to know more about this founding couple: did they go to England before emigrating to the US and where and when did they enter the country? Missing death dates from gen 2 and 3 should also be filled in.

I invite help from younger family members, esp nephews and nieces and their offspring, to correct mistakes and to help fill out the missing data on gen 1 and 2. E-mail me at motley31d@juno.com.

  • Notes:
  • FIRST GENERATION--John and Bridget, born in Ireland, immigrated to America from England, according to the 1870 census.
  • SECOND GENERATION--James, born in England of Irish parents, died between 1880 and 1890 in New Castle Twp. Worked in Wadesville as engineer in a coal mine.Served in Civil War. Enlisted 23 Feb 1864 in the 15th Pa Infantry/Company A. Discharged 31 Jan 1865. (www.rootsweb.com/~paschuy2/newcastle.html. Aunt Bridge (his daughter)  said that he was captured by the rebels, sent to a prison camp and came out of the service in poor health. Have not been able to get any info on his service from the Civil War websites. Catherine born in Pa, parents born in Ireland.(info from AMD) I remember visiting Catherine after she fell and broke her hip. She was confined to bed,
  • dying eventually of pneumonia. I knew she was Bridge's mother, but had no idea that she was the founding mother of the clan. She always wore a little white cap on her head.
  • THIRD GEN-- Martin ran a speakeasy on N Center Street in Pottsville during Prohibition. Motley's place is mentioned in the letters of John O'Hara. One of my stories, "Heartache" tells of an incident in his and Bridge's life.
  • FOURTH GEN--William, killed in a coal mining accident in 1941. Photo in another link (more old photos) shows him and Bob in front of the hoist car of a bootleg hole in back of Aunt Bridge's house on the Green Hill. He was killed a few months later in a hole at the front of Aunt B's home. My story 'Lawless Valley' gives a fictionalized account of his last months.
